SARS-CoV-2 Testing for COVID-19
Type of Testing
Types of Comprehensive Covid-19 Testing Programs
Screening Test – Do you have the virus?
This highly accurate screening will detect active infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19.
Diagnostic Test- Confirmation of a positive
This test is performed with a physician order to confirm a possible diagnosis of COVID-19 infection.
Follow-up Screening (monitoring)
This test is performed during or after a quarantine period to demonstrate the presence or absence of virus.
We Offer the Following COVID-19 Testing Strategies
In accordance with guidelines developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), MOgene’s SARS-CoV-2 test is incorporated within the following strategy:
- Testing individuals with signs or symptoms consistent with COVID-19
- Testing individuals with recent known or suspected exposure to SARS-CoV-2 to control transmission
- Testing individuals without known or suspected exposure to SARS-CoV-2 for early identification in special settings
When compared to saliva based collection devices, Nasopharyngeal swabs are more difficult to administer and not as patient-friendly.
MOgene's saliva-based SARS-CoV-2 test can be self-collected easily as the patient spits into a sterile container. The saliva collection kit rapidly inactivates the virus in the collection tube and is safe for collection by a non-health care professional.

COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus, or 2019-nCoV) is the name for the respiratory syndrome caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV- 2).
Diagnosis may be difficult when performing a physical exam because mild cases of COVID-19 may appear similar to the flu or a bad cold. A PCR laboratory test can confirm the presence of SARS-CoV-2 which is responsible for COVID-19.
The symptoms of confirmed COVID-19 can range from mild to severe. Some people who are infected don’t have any symptoms and don’t feel sick. Most people have mild symptoms.
Common symptoms include fever greater than (100.4 oF), new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Less common symptoms include tiredness, body or muscle aches, headache (new onset or unusual), nausea, vomiting, new loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, sore throat, and runny or stuffy nose.
Testing is recommended for individuals that have symptoms of COVID-19 or believe they have recently been exposed to the virus. There are some instances when testing may be appropriate even if you have not had symptoms. Check with your healthcare provider to determine whether this test is right for you.
If you believe you may have previously been exposed or symptomatic, an antibody test may be more appropriate for you.
If you suspect you may have COVID-19, you should contact your healthcare provider for guidance. Your healthcare provider will review your symptoms to determine if testing is appropriate. If COVID-19 diagnostic testing makes sense for you, your healthcare provider will direct you where to go to get tested. Diagnostic testing includes collecting your specimens (for example, nose or throat swab) to be sent out for testing to determine if you are positive for COVID-19.
The RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) test looks for specific genomic markers of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. This test will tell you if you have the virus which causes COVID-19
The antibody test checks your blood for antibodies. This test will tell you if you had a previous infection with the virus that causes COVID-19
The MOgene COVID-19 test is an RT-PCR test that is designed to detect active SARS-CoV-2 virus in patients. This test will tell you if you are currently infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.
No, only an antibody-based blood test that looks for antibodies can indicate prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2 or a COVID-19 infection.
The RT-PCR test is the most accurate test on the market to detect for active Sars-COV-2 virus
If you receive a positive for SARS-CoV-2, you may need to receive additional testing to determine when you can leave self-isolation. Check with your healthcare provider on recommendations for further testing.
If you receive a negative result for SARS-CoV-2, you may still become infected with the virus in the future. Testing may be recommended if you develop symptoms or are exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.
In certain cases an INDETERMINATE result may require repeat testing.
MOgene is CLIA-approved to perform high complexity molecular testing, including COVID-19 related testing. The MOgene test is safe and easy to use and requires a saliva sample. A sample is collected by spitting your saliva into the tube provided.
The MOgene COVID-19 kit has a long shelf-life and can be stored for a long period of time. Once the collection kit has been opened, the collection and shipment of the sample should be completed in 24-48 hours.

If you test positive for COVID-19, it means you were infected at the time the sample was collected. Preventive measures should be taken to avoid the spread of disease including: self-isolation with the exception of seeking medical care, monitoring symptoms, cleaning all “high-touch” surfaces every day, frequent hand washing, covering any coughs and sneezes, and wearing a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. Check with your healthcare provider, and local authorities regarding progression of symptoms and the discontinuation of home isolation.
If you test negative for COVID-19 by a diagnostic test, you were most likely not infected at the time your sample was collected. However, that does not mean you will not get sick in the future, nor does this test determine whether you have been infected with COVID-19 in the past. The test result only means that you did not have any detectable Sars-Cov-2 virus at the time of testing.
Your results will be ready 48-72 hours after the sample is received at MOgene’s lab.
Employer: MOgene will coordinate with each employer on how test reports will be reported.
At Home Test: You will access to the MOgene portal and will be notified by email once your test results are available.
When your company creates an account with MOgene, you will be set up with an online portal (we should add in verbiage around safety and privacy once available). All orders will be placed online through your company portal.
Yes. According to the EEOC’s Technical Assistance Questions and Answers, an employer may choose to administer COVID-19 testing to employees before they enter the workplace to determine if they have the virus.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that any mandatory medical test of employees be “job related and consistent with business necessity.” Applying this standard to the current circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, employers may take steps to determine if employees entering the workplace have COVID-19. That’s because an individual with the virus will pose a direct threat to the health of others.
Please contact MOgene to schedule a call with a testing coordinator for information on how to create a customized COVID-19 testing program to meet the needs of your organization.
When implementing an employer screening and confirmatory program, all onsite employees should be tested at regular intervals.
The antibody test will check your blood to look for antibodies. This may tell you if you had a previous infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. Having antibodies to this virus may prevent you from getting infected with the virus again. However, there is not enough information known as to how much protection or for what length of time the protection may last.
Currently, MOgene only offers the RT-PCR testing and screening program. This test is performed with a physician order to confirm a possible diagnosis of COVID-19 infection.
A representative from MOgene will coordinate with the employer on how often they will require to test their employees.
Employee testing is typically on a voluntary basis. Please consult your legal team regarding decisions related to COVID-19 employee testing.
